The AI Search Marketshare Race: OpenAI Accounts for 66.5% of 2.5M+ Monthly Citations to HackerNoon: https://hackernoon.com/the-ai-search-marketshare-race-openai-accounts-for-665percent-of-25m-monthly-citations-to-hackernoon

OpenAI (66.5%) accounts for the majority of AI search calls to HackerNoon, based on my analysis of end-user–initiated requests from AI assistant and AI search to HackerNoon blogs from April 22 to May 22, 2025. AmazonBot (Anthropic) followed with 25.5%, and Perplexity trailed at 8%. The total volume of end user AI requests jumped to 2,563,800 in 30 days, which is 34% more requests for HackerNoon blogs than my April report on the AI search marketshare — underscoring a growing dependence on AI-driven discovery.

AI Search Traffic Marketshare for Calling HackerNoon Blogs: 52% OpenAI, 30% Amazon & 18% Perplexity: https://hackernoon.com/ai-search-traffic-marketshare-for-calling-hackernoon-blogs-52percent-openai-30percent-amazon-and-18percent-perplexity

OpenAI (51.8%) leads AI search traffic market share, based on my analysis of end-user–initiated AI Assistant and AI Search requests to HackerNoon. While Amazon (30.4%) and Perplexity (17.9%) also secured significant portions of the market, the total volume of requests (1,915,670 in 30 days) and competition among AI search providers indicate increasing reliance on AI for information retrieval and presentation.

This analysis aggregates AI Assistant and AI Search queries to approximate end-user–initiated AI search traffic across HackerNoon URLs. Non-human traffic such as web crawlers, bots, and automated scripts have been filtered out to ensure data reflects only human-initiated requests. The dataset reviewed comprises instances where AI systems recommended HackerNoon content in response to human queries. Between February 28 and March 28, 2025, HackerNoon received 1,915,670 AI-referred search requests. OpenAI accounted for 991,580 requests, Amazon accounted for 581,990 requests , and Perplexity accounted for 342,100 requests, according to Cloudflare AI Audit tool, which currently tracks these top providers. HackerNoon is a technical audience, so our data is better positioned to answer questions like, if you work in tech what AI search engine do you rely on?

👋 👋 👋 In a recent AI Time Journal Interview, I was asked: How has HackerNoon leveraged AI to enhance its platform? and what lessons have you learned about AI’s role in spam creation and prevention?

https://HackerNoon.com uses AI and machine learning to improve grammar, translate stories, generate featured images, suggest possible headlines, (and note, I would love to hear what else you think we should use AI for!) . Maybe Clippy was ahead of its time? Writers have and will continue to have smart AI assistants. AI can not and should not replace the writer, but it should and can assist the writer and editor throughout the publishing process. We are documenting our approach to editorial at https://EditingProtocol.com. With the rise of LLMs, we’ve seen an influx of AI story spam submissions. Other blogging platforms are hosting so many of these types of machine-generated stories right now. We are actively taking steps not to become a wasteland of AI’s musings. Because every story is reviewed before publication (with about half being rejected), I think our average story quality is higher than other blogging platforms. Every story submission automatically enters into plagiarism and AI writing detection. We highlight what sections are likely, possibly, and unlikely to be written by AI. It’s all about confidence levels. Ultimately, human editors make the final call in interpreting the machines’ reports.
