Observing the paralyzing pace at which artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to advance, one might become skeptical about the wisdom of limiting or even stigmatizing its applications. Moreover, as the level of excitement around AI continues to rise while fears of misuse and misinformation persist, it comes as no surprise that the relationship between AI companies and government institutions, such as the Pentagon, has become the subject of widespread discussions and debates.

In recent news, OpenAI announced a deal that would allow the US military to avail its technologies in classified settings. While the announcement sparked muddled conversations about the ethical and moral implications of accepting military collaborations for AI technology, it seems that OpenAI eventually ceded to the pressure partly mounted by the Pentagon's critique of its rival, Anthropic. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman conceded that the negotiations commenced shortly after Pentagon's public upbraiding of Anthropic, he hastened to emphasize that the deal was not premeditated.

Neither OpenAI nor AI developers as a collective possess any concrete anticipation of war or ill-intentioned behavior on part of the military. Any apprehension lies in the potential for unsupervised use of powerful technology and the resulting vulnerability to unauthorized access, exploitation of sensitive information, and hazard of consequential misuse.

However, when these collision courses finally intersect, small startups and tech titans alike grapple with navigating the rocky terrain of ethics, with limited knowledge of the future uses of AI technology. Now that OpenAI has struck a deal with the Pentagon, Anthropic's prior failure to do so puts them in a compromising position: should they continue to resist military involvement and, by doing so, jeopardize their growth and relevance or should they reconsider and renegotiate, fost
