Guest Column: I’m a Computer Scientist. Here’s How We Should Help Aging Parents With Technology
Technology presents numerous opportunities to make our daily lives easier and more convenient. As a computer scientist, I believe it's essential that we use this powerful tool to help our aging parents navigate different challenges in their later years. Here are five of the most promising ways in which we can apply artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological advancements to assist our elderly parents:
Voice-activated Assistants: Technologies like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant can be extremely helpful for our elderly parents. With just a simple voice command (such as "turn on the news"), they can access information, make calls, set alarms, or even control their smart home devices, without having to struggle with small buttons or touch screens.
AI-Powered Virtual Assistants: While voice-activated assistants provide immediate solutions to everyday tasks, some older individuals need more personalized assistance. AI-powered virtual assistants are more than just platforms to find information; they can simulate human interactions and provide companionship, emotional support, and reminders to take medications.
Telemedicine and Digital Health: With the help of technology, we can create simple, user-friendly apps that empower our aging parents to track their health, set reminders for taking medications, and access essential information about diseases, prevention, and treatment options.
Smartwatches and Health-Tracking Gadgets: These devices can monitor heart rate, sleep patterns, and movement, helping our parents take control of their physical health, and keep an eye on early warning signs of potential health issues.
Resiliency Bots: These unique AI bots can help older adults cope with memory-related challenges, such as remembering appointments, names, or
